Pilates Please!

20130722-135405.jpgKate Furman is one of the Okanagan’s most sought after Pillates instructors. Her talents have recently caught the attention of some of Kelowna’s elite yoga instructors, looking for that extra edge that will allow them to take their practice to another level. Pilates is a physical fitness system developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates and is a body conditioning routine that may help build flexibility, muscle strength, and endurance in the legs, abdominals, arms, hips, and back. It puts emphasis on spinal and pelvic alignment, breathing, and developing a strong core or center, and improving coordination and balance. Pilates’ system allows for different exercises to be modified in range of difficulty from beginning to advanced. Intensity can be increased over time as the body conditions and adapts to the exercises.

Why is Kate of NEU Movement in such high demand? We sat down with her recently for a little Q&A.

We’re all familiar with yoga, what the heck is Pilates?

Pilates is a system that creates optimal alignment throughout your entire body. Doing Pilates helps you to discover ways in which your body has been compensating due to old injuries, stress, improper alignment, bad posture etc. A regular practice will create new neural pathways so that your body fires into the most effective muscles for uniform development. As a bonus you can take your body out of pain while getting into amazing shape.20130722-135206.jpg

How did Neu Movement come into existence?

My friend Lara Yanik started the first studio in Salmon Arm 9 years ago when she was just 20! Kate Watson joined forces with her and they sold that studio and began NEU Movement in Vernon and most recently Kelowna along with Hayley Harkness and Jen Gulley.

Where is Neu movement located?

On Yates Road just off of Glenmore beside the Blendz coffee shop!

How do yogis benefit from incorporating Pilates into their weekly routine?

Pilates is a full body workout but also very specific to muscles that need to be strengthened so any weaknesses in your practice can be addressed right away. In my own experience I’ve completely transformed my yoga practice through strengthening and realigning. The marriage between the 2 is brilliant and will both be lifetime practices for me!

Sarah Wolton co-owner of The Hot Box Yoga is one of your clients, how is she as a student? She seems to rave about it.

Yes, I teach Sarah weekly and have so much fun with her! As a student I couldn’t ask for more because she is so open to learning and growing. We come from a similar background with our yoga trainings as well so the language flows easily between us!

If you opened a studio in the tropics would you call it Pilates of the Caribbean?

Wow~ I think I just added this to my bucket list!!

You are also a certified yoga instructor, do you teach that as well or plan on going back to it?

I was teaching yoga classes and privates for a couple years but I haven’t been teaching any since I’ve been training in Pilates and was also managing the Kelowna studio until this month. I’m really excited to layer that back in though and I will be teaching yoga at Hot Box this fall!

Have you ever tried Pilates on a SUP?

Yes! So much fun! The girls have a SUP Pilates class every Monday night on Kal lake through the Vernon studio and I plan to run some in Kelowna next summer!
